Review ★ Roundup

100 – The Gamer

Still Wakes the Deep is a psychological horror game from The Chinese Room. You have to escape the collapsing Beira D oil rig, all while dealing with a terrifying supernatural entity.

86 – PC Gamer

Still Wakes the Deep is more than the sum of its horror parts, thanks to one of the best stories I've played through in a very long time.

85 – Xbox ERA

Still Wakes the Deep is a special experience. A brilliant setting for a horror story is matched by quality writing and stellar voice acting. It’s available on Game Pass at launch and I highly recommend giving it a try to anyone interested.

85 – Playstation Universe

What it lacks in any challenge, it certainly makes up for in authenticity. Still Wakes The Deep provides some excellent lovecraftian horror on board the eery yet original location that is the Beira D. Dedicated and genuine performances from the cast of often relatable roughnecks drive home an engaging story in what ultimately become one of my favorite horror games in recent memory.

80 – VG247

In the end, Still Wakes the Deep is worth the six or seven hours it takes to blast through the story. It’s not scary as such, but it’s tense as hell, and there’s a poignance here that shines brightly through the veneer of soot, and gloop, and toxic masculinity What this game is really about, just like that bronze monument in Eyemouth, is the widows and bairns left behind.

80 – Push Square

Still Wakes The Deep may not stick around for long, but it’ll have an iron-clad grip on you across its runtime. There’s clear inspiration here from horror movie classics such as Alien and The Thing, and we adored seeing those inspirations play out through its highly-detailed settings and salt-of-the-Earth cast of characters.

80 – VGC

Still Wakes the Deep is a short but effective game with brilliant performances, a deeply atmospheric setting and fun creature effects. Critics of the hand-holding found in the 'walking sim' genre likely won't be converted, but those looking for an engaging story they can play through in a night or two will strike oil with this one.

80 – God is a Geek

Still Wakes the Deep tells an emotional tale under extreme circumstances, with a stunningly detailed world and intelligent storytelling.

80 – Destructoid

Still Wakes the Deep blends this terror with genuine human flaws. Outside of Dredge, I don’t know if a game has felt so uniquely Lovecraftian.

80 – gamesradar+

This is a great, if short, horror game with impeccable looks and fantastic atmosphere. It's scary and full of character, but with a barely five-hour run time your enjoyment could depend on what you paid for it.

80 – Pure Xbox

Still Wakes the Deep is a tight, narrative adventure dripping in atmosphere and oozing in that sweet Scottish personality we've all come to love (shouting and swearing lots, as it turns out).

70 – Gamespot

The Chinese Room returns to the horror genre with an original tale featuring a memorable monster.

60 – Eurogamer

While Still Wakes the Deep is a beautiful work of atmosphere and tension, all that can be shattered by its strictly linear trappings.

60 – IGN

Still Wakes the Deep's nearly on-rails structure and ineffective scares undersell its otherwise fantastic setting.
