VISUALS
Games are emulated quite well, for the most part, and look as good as you’d expect them to. However, and unfortunately, emulation is not 100% accurate. While I haven’t played every game included, there are several games that suffer from noticeable pixelation.
It could be an emulation issue or a streaming bug. But it appears to happen with the same games, and it doesn’t matter if I’m wired or wireless. Also, games that feature vector graphics (Star Wars Arcade) appear blurry and aren’t as crisp as they would be if running on original hardware or even MAME.
The only real downside here is the lack of any type of scanline filters for that true nostalgic 80’s look and feel.
GAMEPLAY
Since these games can only be streamed via cloud servers, performance will vary depending on your internet connection. I have 1GB ↑/↓ and didn’t experience any issues with latency or load times regardless of my setup. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised at how well the games ran while only running into an occasional hiccup. It’s not perfect, but it’s real close.
REPLAYABILITY
As of this writing, there are 1,462 games featured that span multiple platforms and genres with new games added each week. There are official Antstream weekly/monthly tournaments as well as daily mini-game challenges created by the community (players) for everyone to compete in. You can even create your own challenges for others to compete against your score or time.
Many games have online high score leaderboards allowing players to compete globally for the top score or time. It truly is a virtual arcade!
