Starfield Performance Mode coming to Xbox Series X

Published on |

Starfield Performance Mode is coming to Xbox Series X in the May update.

Bethesda released the patch notes for Starfield Update 1.11.33 releasing in Steam Beta today and in addition to a massive list of fixes and improvements, they are adding a performance mode for Xbox Series X.

This new mode will allow players with a VRR enabled display to choose between 30, 40, 60 or an Uncapped frame rate while also choosing to prioritize between Visuals and Performance while trying to maintain the frame rate target.

Prioritizing Visuals keeps the highest resolution while maintaining full detail for special effects, lighting, and crowds. Prioritizing Performance lowers internal resolution and detail for special effects, lighting, and crowds.

Both modes may adjust internal resolution dynamically when scenes or action get heavier as well. When switching between modes, you will see the lighting change briefly as the system catches up to the new mode.

Starfield will now default to a frame rate target of 40, while keeping the priority for full visuals for all VRR enabled displays.

If you don’t have a VRR capable display you can still enjoy (at least) 60FPS or stick with 30FPS for higher quality visuals with an even more stable performance. However, according to the patch notes, there may be screen tearing on non-VRR displays.

If you haven’t played a Bethesda title on a VRR display, you’re miss out as it’s literally a night and day difference in terms of performance. Frame rate issues are almost non-existent in areas where they would normally be noticeable on a non-VRR display.

Full patch notes are available here.

Starfield is available now for PC and Xbox Series X|S.
