Microsoft tweaks Sea of Thieves for PlayStation 5 Release

Published on |

With Sea of Thieves about to make its debut on PlayStation 5, Microsoft held a beta for players to test out the servers prior to launch.

The folks over at Digital Foundry were able to use this beta to compare the differences between the Xbox versions and PlayStation 5 code and it appears that the PlayStation 5 version comes out (slightly) on top.

Graphics:

For the most part, the PlayStation 5 is on par with the Xbox Series X version. In terms of image quality, both consoles deliver a sharp, crisp, 4K image. While DF did note that dynamic resolution is possible, neither console came in below 2160p (native 4K) during their testing.

If you are not familiar with dynamic resolution, it’s a process where the image quality is reduced to favor performance. So, in instances where you have a lot going on at one time, explosions, numerous enemies or players, the game will automatically lower the resolution to keep the frame rate intact as to not impact performance. Which is crucial in online multiplayer games.

They further noted that draw distances for foliage appear to be slightly better on PlayStation 5 and shadows look to be sharper with more visible detail. It appears as though the PlayStation 5 version is a close match to the highest shadow quality option on PC.

Performance:

As far as performance is concerned, DF noted that PlayStation 5 was mostly also on par with the Series X running at 60fps. However, they did note frame-time blips which mainly affects the Series S version as well as a few instances of the game either locking up or crashing entirely.

While there is a 120fps / 1080p option, unfortunately, DF didn’t test it for their beta analysis.

Overall, it appears as though PlayStation 5 players will be getting the same experience Xbox Series and PC players have always had. Which is a good thing. There isn’t another game on the market that captures the look and feel of sailing the high seas like Rare has with Sea of Thieves and it’s great to see it release in such a polished state on PlayStation 5.

Sea of Thieves is currently available for ALL Xbox consoles and PC and will be releasing on PlayStation 5 on April 30th, 2024.
